LatestA challenge to community groups – from Damien Quinn
Working as a community development worker with Galway Rural Development has been life-changing, ex-prisoner Damien Quinn told a recent ‘In Our Words’ event in Athlone. The celebratory occasion was held to showcase the value of the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme for which Damien works. Having used his three years in prison to better educate himself, he found that the work involved in turning his life around was not over at all when he came out. Due to his criminal record, he was locked out of the type of community development roles he sought. That was the case until he was finally given a break.

As Ireland’s population expands, so too does the need for community development and family support and earlier this month it was announced by the government that 10 more groups are to be admitted to the Family Resource Centre Programme. Being part of the national programme is sought after by community groups because it provides greater security, sustainability and opportunities for increased access to resources. The successful applicants will now be allocated core funding of €180,000 for each full year of operation.

Irish civil society agrees on 7 out of 8 questions on genocide
Based on a survey of 86 people serving as paid workers and/or as volunteers in Irish civil society, we found strong agreement among respondents on 7 out of 8 questions. Only one question received a mixed response. It concerned "leadership by the Community & Voluntary Sector in Ireland in response to the genocide in Gaza" with responses as follows: 11.2% felt it was "very good", 31.3% thought it was "about right" and 57.5% felt it has been "less than adequate".
